Ordering Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions are medications which appear on your prescription slip which the doctor would like you to continue on a regular basis. Your list can also be found on your online account.

How to Request a Repeat Prescription

Repeat prescriptions may be ordered in 2 ways:

  • Online
    You can order your repeat prescriptions via SystmOnline on a computer, tablet or smartphone. This can now also be done via the Airmid App.
  • In Person
    Tick the boxes on your green repeat medication slip, OR, write a note stating what medications you would like and drop it off or post it to the surgery. Please only order medications that you need.
  • Email – You can email your request to [email protected] – please ensure you put your full name and date of birth on the email request.

Collecting your Prescription

All prescriptions will be sent to your nominated pharmacy. If you do not have one nominated, then it will be automatically sent to your nearest chemist.

Some local chemists offer a collection and delivery service, please enquire at your local outlet to arrange this service.

For some/few medications, the prescription must be printed off and taken to the pharmacy in person. You will always be notified if this is the case for your prescription.

Questions about your Prescription

If you have questions about your medication, your local pharmacists can answer your questions on prescription and over-the-counter medicines.

You can also contact us at the surgery or phone our pharmacist after 10am.

Medication Reviews

Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, clinical pharmacist, nurse practitioner or practice nurse at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip.

Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.

You can do this in two ways. 

  • Phone us Monday to Friday, from 10am to 6.30pm.
  • Visit the surgery and speak with a receptionist, Monday to Friday from 10am.

Prescription Charges

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

About Pharmacists

Pharmacists are experts in medicines who can help you with minor health concerns.

As qualified healthcare professionals, they can offer clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor illnesses, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, tummy trouble and aches and pains.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.

Disposing of Old Medicines

If your medicine is out of date, unwanted, or some of it is left over after you have stopped taking it, do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet. Instead, take it to your pharmacy to be disposed of safely.

Electronic Prescription Service

Portway Family Practice is signed up to the Electronic Prescribing Service. This will affect how you order and collect your prescriptions.

What does this mean for you?

  • If you collect your repeat prescription from the surgery, you will not have to visit the surgery to pick up your paper prescription. Instead, your GP will send it electronically to the place you choose, saving you time.
  • You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop.
  • You may not have to wait as long at the pharmacy as there will be time for your repeat prescriptions to be ready before you arrive.

How can you use EPS?

You need to choose a place for your prescriptions to electronically be sent to. This is called nomination. Ask any pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor that offers EPS or your GP practice to add your nomination for you. You don’t need a computer to do this.

Can I change my nomination?

Yes you can. If you want to change where your prescription is sent to, when your next prescription is due to be ordered speak to the new pharmacy and nominate yourself there.
